Kershaw: Zoom-Zoom Nationals

The weather cooperated for the entire event by staying dry during the day. There were a few overnight showers which gave to morning fog and changing track conditions each day.
With Missy being Caleb's full-time mechanic, it was a busy weekend in the pits. After each time on the track, there were changes to the setup and notes made to continue understanding what Caleb is looking for in the chassis setup and what works best to keep up with the track. "My mom was a really good wrench on my kart. We tried a whole bunch of changes to make the kart better all weekend," said Caleb.
The first day of racing, Caleb qualified 16 out of the 28 entries in Yamaha Rooke Sportsman. The pre-final saw Caleb gain two positions to finish 14th, which would be his starting position for the final. The final was a successful drive, with Caleb gaining six positions to ultimately finish 8th.
Day two brought a few more challenges. The qualifying round was slightly better than the first day with Caleb putting it 14th. In the pre-final, Caleb gained one position to finish 13th. The final is where the challeging conditions came about. On the warm up laps, other karters engines stalled. Scott Ferris did his best to run around the track and start everyone he could. While Scott was firing engines and sending kids back out, it seemed as for every one that was started, another died. The flag man continued to to give warm up laps and finally start the race after approximately six warm up laps (typically on one warm up lap is run). Caleb's motor never "cleared out" and due to the idle conditions on the warm up lap, utltimately fouled the plug, causing the engine to not run properly when the race was eventually started. Caleb commented after the race, "it was bad becasue in the final, the flag man should have thrown the green instead of sending us around and around while other karters were trying to get back in the race."
While the weekend may have had ups and downs, it was a successful learning weekend for both Caleb and Missy working together to creaete a series of notes that they will hopefully be able to apply at the next event.
